Temperatures in excess of 104 degrees and a 2-alarm fire west of Lincolnville has prompted Dan D’Albini, the county’s recently appointed emergency management director, to ask county commissioners to ban burning.

Drought conditions are affecting the water level at Marion Reservoir, Florence is rationing water, and stockmen struggle to keep animals alive.

The 81st annual Marion County Fair will begin Thursday, July 27, with the opening of the carnival at 6 p.m. It will conclude July 30 with the demolition derby and fireworks. Theme of the fair is “Cows and Luaus.”

The 15-year-old Cottonwood Valley League All-Stars won the district championship July 10. Team members, from Marion and Hillsboro high schools, were Bret Voth, Jordan Faul, Luke Steele, Taylor Heidebrecht, Dylan Seacat, Zach Robson, Nathan Cyr, Jacob Baldwin, Cody Delk, Austin Pedersen, and Grif Case. The 11-year-old CVL team placed second in the finals.
