The true Christmas spirit was evident Saturday at Marion VFW when four lines of tables were heavily laden with gifts for the Marion / Centre Christmas Angel program. Forty-seven adults, representing 29 families, selected gifts from the donated items.

The home of Judge and Mrs. Michael Powers, 115 Elm St., was awarded first place in the Marion Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest. Second place was awarded to Lou and Judy Wegerer, and third went to Jim and Judy Versch.

Marion High School football player Jason Wheeler has been selected to participate in the 1996 Kansas Shrine Bowl on Aug. 3 at Topeka. Wheeler was selected by 40 sports media professionals across the state.

Kathryn Elizabeth Ehrlich gave her mother a great Christmas present early Thursday morning. She showed up unexpectedly. The infant was born at home between 1:10 and 1:30 a.m. while parents Mike and Kathy Ehrlich were awaiting an ambulance.

A one-hour documentary, “Christmas at War,” to be shown Christmas Eve on the History Channel, will include an interview with Marion County Record editor Bill Meyer. Five veterans of the 99th Infantry Division, which bore the brunt of the initial German attack in the Battle of the Bulge, were interviewed for the program. They included Meyer and Wichitan Rick Render, whose wife is from Tampa.
