Two home-town boys from Marion made their mark Sunday in the Tucson Marathon. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Leslie Powell and Dr. Michael Brodhead completed the 26-mile race from Centennial, Arizona, to Nogales, Mexico, and back to Tucson.

Powell, 48, is a retired Air Force U-2 “spy plane” pilot and Brodhead, 45, is a noted historian on the staff of the University of Nevada at Reno.

This week’s “Personality Profile” by special feature writer Ruth Meyer is concerned with Bill Harmon, new executive director of the United States Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for Marion County.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Heise of Lincolnville are shown as they find it convenient to mail letters from their car in Marion since the drop box was moved to better accommodate drivers at Marion Post Office. Postal employee Ron Kelsey, Florence, shines the old mailbox in its new location and reminds motorists that the path is one-way only.

Bruce Winkler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Winkler of Marion, has been selected for honorable mention honors in the essay contest recently conducted by the Grand Lodge of Kansas and open to all seniors in Kansas high schools.

Frans, owner and operator of Marion Burger Shake, offered high school basketball players a free coke and hamburger to give them extra firepower at the Burrton tournament.

Jason Bina was proclaimed hands down winner Monday night at the annual Marion Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. Eric Kline who finished second, made one improvement to his racer — he ran it backward after completing a dismal first round race and wound up in second place. Christopher Loveless finished third.
