"Aloha and farewell" pie night is send off for Little Pleasures

“Aloha” is a Hawaiian greeting used for both “hello” and “goodbye.” Local business owner Marisa Javier will be saying it in the latter form after her shop, Little Pleasures, is scheduled to close April 29.

A final pie night titled “Aloha and Farewell to Marisa” will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the coffeehouse, which has been open since 2003.

The event will offer a “greatest hits” of various pies and cheesecakes served throughout the Thursday night event’s two-year run.

Tabor College graphic design professor Derek Hamm said that the pie night event started Oct. 2013 as a way for one of his classes to connect with downtown businesses and for his own desire to have a space for community interaction.

The best parts of having pie night for Hamm have been “watching the line fill up right when we open and walking around to all the tables after people are seated.”

Although the closing of Little Pleasures will be saying “aloha,” Hamm hopes the last pie night will also welcome in hello “alohas” as attendees reminisce on the experiences they have had at the shop.

“With Little Pleasures closing, we wanted to do something special to acknowledge all that it has brought to the community,” Hamm said. “It’s certainly sad to see it close, but we also want to recognize all the great experiences that we’ve had there and the effort that has gone into them, and give others a chance to do the same.”
