REPORTED

These accident reports were released this past week by law enforcement agencies:

SHERIFF

90th Rd. east of Kanza Rd.

A 2011 Jeep Wrangler owned and driven by Briauna M. Barkdoll, 29, Hesston, died, began smoking, and burned at 7:08 p.m. Dec. 6.

Barkdoll and passenger Aldrin D. Geness, 26, Maize, were able to grab belongings and exit the Jeep, which was listed as destroyed.

190th east of Kanza Rd.

Attempting to avoid a head-on collision with a westbound vehicle coming at him at 10:09 a.m. Dec. 5 in the eastbound lane, Alexis L. Branson, 17, Marion, drove his 2009 Toyota Camry off the road to the right.

The Camry, owned by Hannah M. Branson of the same address, remained drivable with damage to its right front, hood, and undercarriage.

Cheyenne M. Wilson, 16, of a different Marion address was a passenger.

US-50 east of Yarrow Rd.

Erik A. Cazares Arredondo, 32, Overland Park, hit a deer at 7:45 a.m. Dec. 10 with his 2025 Ram 3500.

The pickup remained drivable with damage to its front.

HILLSBORO

Park Pl.

Hillsboro trash truck driver Weston D. Giesbrecht, 30, rural Hillsboro, hit and broke a plastic pipe outside Parkside Homes at 11:25 a.m. Dec. 10 while backing up during trash collection.

A Parkside employee told police he would repair the damage without any need for an insurance claim.

MARION

Roosevelt and Denver Sts.

Two women were injured, one of them taken to a hospital, when their cars collided at 9:05 a.m. Dec. 8 in an uncontrolled intersection.

Both said they had slowed or stopped but did not see the other woman’s vehicle.

Michelle L. Petersen, 53, Newton, was driving her 2015 Nissan Altima east on Denver St. Sondra K. Wilson-Bezdek, 45, Marion, was driving her 2020 Nissan Murano north on Roosevelt St.

Peterson said she slowed and saw no other traffic. Wilson-Bezdek said she stopped but leaned over to grab a donut before continuing.

Officer Kaylan Miles’ report blamed the accident on inattentive driving by both women. No tickets were listed as being issued.

Both women were checked by ambulance attendants. Petersen declined to be taken to a hospital, but Wilson-Bezdek was taken to St. Luke Hospital by Marion ambulance.

The front ends of their cars collided in the middle of the intersection. Both sustained disabling damage — Petersen’s to its entire front half, windshield, and undercarriage, and Wilson-Bezdek’s to almost the entirety of the vehicle, including multiple windows.

Both were towed.

Lawrence and Freeborn Sts.

Southbound on Freeborn St. at 9:45 a.m. Dec. 8, Laddie W. Helmer, 82, Marion, did not see a stop sign or a vehicle approaching on Lawrence St. from the east.

Helmer’s 2024 Ford Maverick clipped the rear of the other vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 owned by the county road and bridges department and driven by John S. Millett, 65, Marion.

Both pickups sustained damage characterized as minor — the Ford to its right front and the Chevy to its right rear. Casey G. Regalado, Lincolnville, was a passenger in the Chevy.

Officer Kaylan Miles’ report blames the accident on Helmer running a stop sign, but no tickets are listed as being issued.
