Democratic Women recognize National Fork Day

Marion County Democratic Women got a little rowdy waving semi-sharp, pronged objects in their hands Friday before lunch at Marion Senior Center while they celebrated National Fork Day.

“People brought in their forks and we brandished them high as we sang ‘The Fork Song,’” Janet Bryant said.

Bryant penned lyrics to the tune of “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Her little ditty consisted of two verses and an infectious chorus.

“Use your fork, yes use your fork, and practice every day,” Bryant recited Monday. “Your fork’s your tool to catch your food and forks will save the day.”

Members shared fork trivia. According to Bryant, forks used to be frowned upon by the clergy in the Renaissance because “God gave people hands to eat with.” During that time, it was allegedly considered substantially un-macho to use a fork.

Members also heard a story about a woman whose passion for forks was so great that her dying wish was to be buried with a fork in each hand.

“She believed the best was yet to come,” Bryant said.

In other business:

• President Sue Clough conducted a business meeting after lunch.
• Members said farewell to Carolan McFarland who is moving.
• A holiday meeting was discussed with a tentative date of Dec. 12 at Hilltop Manor in Marion. A chicken enchilada lunch will be served and a $5 budget was set for gifts that should be purchased at thrift shops.
• Connie Fisher closed with devotions.
