Blanche Hoopes

Blanche Mary Hoopes, 98, passed away Dec. 27, 2012, in Canon City, Colo. She was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Harper to William McClellan and Hattie T. (Brown) Nye.

Blanche grew up on a farm near Harper and graduated from Harper High School. She was united in marriage to Virgil Hoopes on June 11, 1933, in Attica. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1987.

During World War II, Blanche and Virgil moved to Marion, where they owned and operated “The Shack” antique store. They enjoyed going to flea markets in Oklahoma and Texas. Blanche also enjoyed quilting, carving small wood pieces, and refinishing furniture. She was a member of the Christian Church in Marion and belonged to several card clubs, including pinochle. In 1998, she moved to Canon City to be closer to her family.

Blanche is survived by her children, Nila Jean (Bob) Cleveland of Canon City and Neil Warren (Penny) Hoopes of Four Seasons, Mo.; six grandchildren, Jill (Bryan) Fredrickson, Jana (Tom) Hoak, Jennie (Jim) Miller, Kendra (Heidi) Scroggs, Doug Hoopes, and Jeweleen (Roger) Phillips; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Leta Sanders of Wichita.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Kreig Scroggs, in 1999; her parents; and four siblings.
