Bluebird boys start league play with win

Contributing writer

Davis Cook, 6-foot-4 senior for the Goessel High School boys’ basketball team, made his presence felt on Friday at Wakefield. Goessel’s center dropped in 18 points to go along with 6 blocks and 9 rebounds to help the Bluebirds to a 44-27 win.

Nic Buller started the game with three drives, scoring the first 5 Bluebird points. Goessel led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Cook got on the board with 8 second-quarter points, some coming as a result of offensive rebounds and several feeds from unselfish teammates. The Bluebirds slowly extended their lead and went into the halftime break ahead, 20-16.

Both teams scored a basket to begin the second half but then Goessel’s defense held the Bombers to only one more field goal in the quarter. Scoring in the quarter for Goessel were Shane Goerzen with a layup, Cook with a basket, Ben Wiens with a steal and layup, Goerzen with a 3-pointer, and Zach Showalter with a soft hook shot as the Bluebirds shot out to a 35-20 lead.

Although the Bombers’ pressure defense caused some turnovers in the last period, the Bluebirds left town with a win, 44-27.

Also scoring for Goessel were Nic Buller with 9 points and Shane Goerzen with 8 points.

The Goessel boys are now 1-0 in the Wheat State League and 3-2 overall. The last game before Christmas was Tuesday against Hope at home.
