Cruise on over to car-lover's fun day

Staff writer

Midway Motors of Hillsboro is offering a weekend car-enthusiast’s day of fun for owners, drivers and admirers.

A cruise will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the business parking lot.

Besides an opportunity to show off a fancy car, there will be a catered barbecue dinner and a horsepower competition.

Zeth Thornhill, sales manager, said a mobile dyno trailer will make a repeat appearance. The machine measures horsepower and torque.

“Last year there was a lot of comparing cars to one another and talking about the good old days,” he said. “The dyno was the main attraction. They were trying to get bragging rights on who had the most powerful car there.”

Last year, people made anywhere from 300 to 650 horsepower, Thornhill said.

He anticipates this year’s cruise will attract bigger, more powerful cars and some will measure up to 2,000 horsepower.

“Your typical car on the street has 200 to 300 horsepower,” Thornhill said.

The dealership made its first foray into hosting a cruise night last year, drawing about 120 cars, from as far as 100 miles away, he said.

“We had a couple of 1920s Model A hot rods, a vintage drag race car, we had a little bit of everything, even newer hot rods,” he said.

The event is planned as an annual event, he said. If the reaction continues to be positive, Midway Motors might turn it into a twice-a-year event.
