OCT. 28
1:06 a.m. — Fire, rescue, and ambulance personnel from Marion were dispatched to a traffic accident initially reported to be near US-56 and Quail Creek Rd., two miles northwest of Marion. After nearly 15 minutes of searching by deputies and repeated calls to the victim by dispatchers, the correct location was determined to be US-56/77 and 270th Rd., nine miles northeast of Marion. A helicopter ambulance was called but canceled. The victim, reportedly having sustained facial lacerations, was transported to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
6:44 p.m. — Peabody ambulance transported a sick person from the 700 block of Elm St. in Peabody to Newton Medical Center. One of two emergency medical technicians responding came from 190th and Nighthawk Rds., 13 miles away.
10:12 p.m. — Peabody ambulance transported a patient with knee and ankle injuries from the 400 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody to Newton Medical.
WEDNESDAY
4:01 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and Goessel first responders were dispatched to a report, relayed through Newton Medical, of a fall by an 80-year-old woman near 90th and Indigo Rds. Ten minutes elapsed before both units had the requisite number of responders and obtained specific directions from dispatchers. The ambulance arrived on the scene at 4:21 p.m. and departed for Newton Medical at 4:39 p.m.
4:14 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance tied up on a call midway between Goessel and Peabody, Marion ambulance was dispatched to transport a 91-year-old woman who fell outside Dale’s Supermarket in Hillsboro. A Hillsboro EMT without an ambulance arrived and began tending to the patient at 4:17 p.m. The Marion ambulance arrived 10 minutes later and, 10 minutes after that, transported the woman to Hillsboro Community Hospital.
4:59 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still at HCH, dispatchers inquired whether it could handle another call, possibly on Lois Lane at Marion County Lake. Marion firefighters may have been summoned to provide lifting assistance. However, details of this call and subsequent dispatches and responses until 8:46 a.m. Thursday were garbled by technical problems.
5:51 p.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched on a call, apparently involving a 14-year-old boy on N. Walnut St. in Peabody. Details could not be discerned because of technical problems.
7:29 p.m. — Details of an additional call, possibly involving Peabody units, could not be discerned because of technical problems.
THURSDAY
8:57 a.m. — Marion ambulance transported to St. Luke an 81-year-old man who fell in a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St., Marion.
Evening — Hillsboro and Peabody ambulances were on standby at high school football games in those communities, and a backup ambulance from Marion was on standby at a high school football game in Goessel.
10:14 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance transported from Bluebird Bowl to Hillsboro Community a 19-year-old woman apparently suffering diabetic seizures.
FRIDAY
1:05 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters responded to a false alarm at Hillsboro High School.
1:36 p.m. — Marion ambulance transported a 14-year-old girl with back pain from Marion Middle School to St. Luke.
1:39 p.m. — Repeated pages to Florence EMTs about a 67-year-old woman who fell in the 500 block of Doyle St. in Florence were not answered. Peabody EMTs were paged next, but only one — insufficient to make the run —responded. Marion’s backup ambulance was paged after that, but dispatchers received no response. At 1:46 p.m., Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to join the EMT from Peabody, who was assigned to serve as a first responder. The ambulance arrived at 2:08 p.m., requested lifting assistance from Florence firefighters at 2:15 p.m., and at 2:39 p.m. transported the patient to St. Luke, arriving at 2:56 p.m.
3:32 p.m. — Still en route back from St. Luke, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to K-15 and 270th Rd., 9 miles north of Hillsboro, where a 38-year-old worker hit his head and briefly lost consciousness when he and his loader fell off a semi-trailer at an asphalt plant. First responders from Durham also were paged, but none responded. EMTs requested a helicopter ambulance from LifeTeam. Durham firefighters were paged to establish a landing zone, but only one responded, so Hillsboro firefighters were paged instead. LifeTeam transported the patient to Wesley Medical Center. EMTs returned to Hillsboro at 5:09 p.m., just in time to pass out candy as part of a Halloween promotion.
SATURDAY
5:37 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Bethesda Home in Goessel to transport to Newton Medical a resident who had fallen and hit his head.
4:05 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to a report from an alarm company about a resident who fell at a home on Lois Lane at Marion County Lake. Marion firefighters were paged at to provide lifting assistance. The resident was transported to St. Luke.
7:14 p.m. — Tampa ambulance transported to Hillsboro Community a patient from the 100 block of Lincoln Ave. in Tampa who reportedly had an object lodged in his throat.
SUNDAY
1:09 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters responded to a false alarm at Tabor College’s Dakota Hall.
8:11 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to a report of an elderly woman in the 500 block of S. Ash St. who may have collapsed during a telephone conversation. Police officers on the scene indicated it might have been a false alarm. EMTs continued but ultimately reported that the woman did not want to be transported.
10:51 a.m. — Marion firefighters responded to a report of a leaking gas meter in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St.
8:59 p.m. — A sheriff’s officer at French Creek Cove requested EMTs be dispatched for a man in his 60s described as heavily intoxicated. Hillsboro ambulance responded to the campsite, but did not provide transportation.
monday
7:20 a.m. — A Lehigh firefighter responded to Lehigh City Hall for a report of a gas smell. The investigation was terminated at 7:29 a.m. after no leak was discovered.
4:58 p.m. — Peabody ambulance was dispatched to provide advanced life support transport for a patient at St. Luke Hospital, but was called off when the hospital reported the patient was not prepared. The ambulance was dispatched to St. Luke again at 5:25 p.m., and departed at 6:03 p.m. for Via Christi St. Joseph.
5:44 p.m. — With Peabody ambulance en route to Wichita, Marion ambulance was dispatched for a report of a woman in her 80s who fell and hit her head at Peabody Care Center. The woman was transported to Newton Medical Center.
7:28 p.m. — Marion ambulance responded to a residence on Back Bay Ct. at the county lake for a woman in her 60s who fell and was complaining of hip pain. Marion firefighters assisted with lifting the woman, and she was transported to St. Luke Hospital. At 9:37 p.m. Marion ambulance returned to the hospital to transport the woman to Newton Medical Center.
