Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MARCH 19

11:41 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm at a farmhouse near 80th and Meridian Rds. was determined by Goessel firefighters to have been triggered accidentally by repair workers.

1:02 p.m. — A 68-year-old man needing surgery was transferred by Marion ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to McPherson Center for Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:39 p.m.

6:54 p.m. — A man who told dispatchers he drank too much alcohol in the 200 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH. Peabody ambulance was paged but did not answer.

MARCH 20

1:05 a.m. — A 20-year-old man having trouble breathing at a home in the 200 block of W. B St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:44 a.m. — A driver who may have suffered a broken nose in a car that was totaled when it collided with an unoccupied garbage truck near 120th and Falcon Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance and instead was picked up by a relative. Goessel first responders, firefighters, and rescue squad members also responded. Marion ambulance and Hillsboro rescue squad members initially were dispatched but later were told to stand down. No accident report has been released.

7:16 p.m. — As a training exercise, Hillsboro firefighters spent nearly two hours conducting a controlled burn near US-56 and Falcon Rd.

9:38 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman who fell at Salem Home in Hillsboro was transferred to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

3:40 a.m. — Smoke smelled in a hallway at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters to have been caused by a cooking accident.

9:42 a.m. — At the request of law enforcement, Marion ambulance checked a man hallucinating at a Victory Ln. duplex in Marion. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:58 a.m. — An elderly man with chest pains at a home in the 100 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. Marion ambulance’s response was delayed, and Hillsboro ambulance initially was paged instead, but it was told to stand down after Marion ambulance responded.

12:05 p.m. — A 2-year-old girl suffering seizures and testing positive for COVID-19 was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from a rental home in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion. With Marion ambulance tied up on the previous call, the county ambulance director also responded to the call. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:53 p.m.

1:55 p.m. — What had been a controlled burn near 110th and X Ranch Rd. was brought back under control within 10 minutes by Florence firefighters.

7:39 p.m. — What had been a controlled burn half a mile south of US-50 and Wagon Wheel Rd. was brought back under control within 25 minutes by Florence firefighters, who remained doing mop-up work for nearly two hours.

7:49 p.m. — Marion firefighters joined law enforcement officers in searching for an elderly man who wandered off after a visitation at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home. He was located within an hour at Historic Elgin Hotel.

8:41 p.m. — A child whose lips were turning blue at a Main Street Ministries apartment in Hillsboro was checked but not taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. Marion ambulance also responded but was told to stand down before it arrived.

FRIDAY

4:03 a.m. — An uninjured 67-year-old woman who slipped out of bed in the 200 block of E. 2nd St. in Peabody was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital. Peabody ambulance also was paged but did not answer.

11:27 a.m. — Burning brush piles that threatened to spread to trees and grass near 120th and Jade Rds. were contained within 1½ hours by Peabody and Hillsboro firefighters.

5:36 p.m. — An 87-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:15 p.m. — Drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident at Lawrence and Cedar Sts. in Marion were checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion firefighters and rescue squad members also briefly were dispatched.

7:47 p.m. — A 100-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:14 p.m. — At the request of Marion police, a woman screaming in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. after a person came to her door to sell something was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

SATURDAY

8:34 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:27 a.m.

12:55 p.m. — An 85-year-old man feeling weak at a home in the 400 block of Briarwood Ln. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:48 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with stomach pain at a house near K-15 and 80th Rd. was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:33 p.m.

SUNDAY

12:15 a.m. — A five-alarm fire, visible for miles, which engulfed a house and threatened other structures on a farm on 110th Rd. east of Pawnee Rd., was battled for more than 2½ hours by firefighters from Hillsboro, Peabody, Goessel, Marion, and Florence, some of whom remained on the scene until after 10 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies and Marion ambulance also responded, as did the county’s emergency manager, who remained on the scene until 7:30 a.m. Hillsboro and Peabody water utilities activated pumps to increase water supply, and a portable light tower was installed to assist firefighters. A fire investigator arrived the next morning.

1:22 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, Hillsboro police, an off-duty Marion officer, and a coroner were dispatched to the 200 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion for a report of a man who shot himself in the head.

10:27 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman not feeling well in the 800 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:49 a.m. — A man in his 70s having trouble breathing in the 700 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters were called to help lift the patient.

2:07 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with respiratory issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita. Marion firefighters were called to help lift the patient. The ambulance returned to Marion at 5:37 p.m.

8:42 p.m. — Smoke at a residence near 59th and Needle Rds. just south of Peabody was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been caused by an overloaded wood-burning stove.

9:14 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman with lung cancer and back pain in the 900 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:09 p.m. A sole medical technician aboard Peabody ambulance provided initial assistance.

MONDAY

1:53 a.m. — An 88-year-old man having trouble waking up in the 300 block of W. Arbor Ct. in Hillsboro was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:41 a.m.
