DISPATCHES
Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
DEC. 2
12:19 a.m. — Marion ambulance transferred a patient to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from a location garbled by reception problems.
9:45 a.m. — Marion ambulance was alerted to an automated call that an 84-year-old woman had fallen at a home in the 400 block of W. 6th St. in Florence, but the call was quickly canceled.
1:29 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 300 block of N. Franklin Ave. in Burns declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders reached her within 11 minutes but were unable to get into her locked house until they found a key eight minutes later. They then told ambulance attendants, who had not yet arrived, that the ambulance would not be needed.
8:15 p.m. — A resident’s fears about a gas stove that had been on for several days at a home in the 300 block of N. Walnut St. in Marion were alleviated by Marion firefighters, who found no buildup of dangerous gases.
DEC. 3
12:44 a.m. — A 51-year-old woman in the 200 N. 4th St. in Florence with problems with an incision after hernia surgery declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
3:41 a.m. — A 97-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance director also responded to the call. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.
9:16 a.m. — A 72-year-old man with a garbled condition at Peabody Health and Rehab in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:20 a.m. — A driver was found dead inside his truck after it rolled upside down into a stream on the west side of Remington Rd. just south of 230th Rd. Marion ambulance and firefighters and a coroner were dispatched. Emergency managers and Marion police provided traffic control for nearly 2½ hours. After the ambulance left, an ambulance supervisor told dispatchers that ambulance attendants would not return as requested by the coroner to draw blood from the victim. However, they did return to provide what they termed supplies.
THURSDAY
3:40 p.m. — A person found to have labored breathing when checked by law enforcement at a home in the 100 block of N. 2nd St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
4:26 p.m. — Bleeding from a recent surgery, a 65-year-old man in the 600 block of S. 4th St. in Marion was taken by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.
FRIDAY
5:51 a.m. — A 37-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Peabody Health and Rehab to NMC Health.
12:23 p.m. — An 81-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
2:48 p.m. — Returning from Wichita, Marion ambulance was diverted to the sheriff’s department to deal with an unspecified situation but did not appear to take anyone to a hospital.
7:46 p.m. — An 83-year-old man with leukemia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The call originally went to Marion ambulance, but Hillsboro ambulance attendants volunteered to go instead.
SATURDAY
2 p.m. — A person involved in a two-vehicle accident at US-56 and K-168 declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters and rescue squad also were dispatched. Marion ambulance offered to respond, too, but attendants were told no major injuries were involved.
3:28 p.m. — Peabody fire trucks participated in a Come Home for Christmas parade in downtown Peabody.
7:09 p.m. — Fire engulfing a vehicle and spreading to grass near 90th and Jade Rds. was extinguished within 30 minutes by Peabody firefighters, who continued mop-up duties for an additional hour.
8:46 p.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances were dispatched to the county jail for two inmates with unrelated problems. A 43-year-old man with chest pains and coughing up blood was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. The other inmate, suffering from drug withdrawal, was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Both were returned to the jail.
SUNDAY
4:55 a.m. — A barn north of 290th Rd. on Sunflower Rd. was destroyed, and flames spread to an adjacent barn and a smaller shed before firefighters from Lincolnville, Lost Springs, Tampa, Marion, and Herington were able to bring the blaze under control. Tampa ambulance stood by in case of injuries. Firefighters remained at the scene for at least three hours.
12:43 p.m. — A 64-year-old woman with back and leg pain in the 400 block of Locust St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
MONDAY
9:06 a.m. — A 45-year-old woman complaining of neck and shoulder pain after a two-vehicle wreck in which airbags deployed at Denver and Roosevelt Sts. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Another driver with similar complaints declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion firefighters and rescue squad members also were dispatched.
2:08 p.m. — A ladder reportedly causing sparks after falling onto an electric line serving a home in the 300 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was removed by Hillsboro firefighters. Lines remained tangled and shorted but were corrected by a city electric crew.
3:51 p.m. — An 81-year-old man who may have suffered a stroke at a farmhouse on 230th Rd. just east of Marion Reservoir was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance.
5:24 p.m. — An unresponsive but conscious 71-year-old woman at a farmhouse near K-15 and 80th Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders arrived within six minutes and evaluated the patient until the ambulance arrived 15 minutes later.
