Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 9

5:56 a.m. — A 23-year-old woman with stomach cramps and irregular breathing at a home in the 700 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance.

1 p.m. — An 18- to 24-year-old woman not feeling right at the Hillsboro Et Cetera Shop was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:32 p.m. — A report of an airplane crash, originally thought to be at Xavier and 30th Rds., turned out to be a safe emergency landing by a small plane on 20th Rd. between Quail Creek and Pawnee Rds. The plane had developed engine trouble after taking off from Newton. Hillsboro ambulance, Burns and Peabody firefighters, a Butler County ambulance, a helicopter ambulance, and two ambulance supervisors were dispatched. One of them drove Marion ambulance, which was short-staffed but could fill in with a Burns firefighter as a driver. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 2:20 p.m. in case of additional calls. However, all units were told they wouldn’t be needed 30 minutes after the initial call.

8:34 p.m. — Peabody firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched for a report of a two-vehicle accident with no injuries at US-50 and Sunflower Rd. Tampa ambulance again was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls. But the call turned out to be about two vehicles that had broken down and were parked along the highway.

DEC. 10

4 a.m. — With Marion ambulance not staffed, Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance supervisor were dispatched for a report of an almost 2-year-old girl not breathing at a home in the 300 block of W. 4th St. in Florence. The girl was to be taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, but did not survive, according to monitored transmissions.

6:12 a.m. — A 90-year-old woman with trouble breathing at a farmhouse on 190th Rd. east of Kanza Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:57 a.m. — An 88-year-old man with rectal bleeding at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

THURSDAY

1:47 a.m. — A 52-year-old man complaining of chest pain at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

8:35 a.m. — A smoke alarm at Parkside Homes assisted living in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm from the facility’s boiler room.

10:36 a.m. — A dizzy 62-year-old woman who fell three times at a farmhouse near 10th and Yarrow Rds. was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders provided initial evaluation of the patient. An ambulance supervisor also responded.

3:57 p.m. — A 60-year-old woman who fell at the Tabor College campus in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:44 p.m. — At a deputy’s request, Marion ambulance was sent to US-50 west of Mustang Rd. for a woman with a migraine and anxiety. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

8:50 p.m. — A 76-year-old man who fell and hurt his head and leg at Parkside Homes was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

FRIDAY

3:43 a.m. — An 83-year-old man with a high temperature and sudden weakness at a home in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.

5:02 a.m. — A 77-year-old man not responding normally at a farmhouse near 160th and Eagle Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:14 a.m. — Marion ambulance and Marion firefighters were dispatched for a woman who hit her head on a steering wheel during a one-vehicle wreck on Timber Rd. south of 175th Rd. Hillsboro ambulance attendants volunteered to respond as well but were told before they arrived that they would not be needed. The woman declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:20 a.m. — With Marion ambulance occupied, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for an 81-year-old woman partially conscious after taking an overdose of prescription drugs at a duplex on Victory Ln. in Marion. She was taken to St. Luke.

2:44 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

4:51 p.m. — A camper fully engulfed by fire in the 200 block of S. Olive St. in Peabody was extinguished within 15 minutes by Peabody firefighters. Hillsboro ambulance and Florence and Burns firefighters also were dispatched but later were told they wouldn’t be needed.

9:32 p.m. — A 91-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

SATURDAY

1:47 a.m. — A 53-year-old man with chills at a home in the 300 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:34 a.m. — A 54-year-old man not breathing at a home in the 700 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was pronounced dead by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. Peabody firefighters helped perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the ambulance arrived.

3:41 a.m. — Marion ambulance was sent to the 200 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody to verify a report that a woman had died. Tampa ambulance was dispatched to stand by in Hillsboro until 4:25 a.m. in case of additional calls.

8:52 a.m. — A 97-year-old woman have troubling breathing at a house in the 300 block of 7th St. in Durham was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Durham first responder provided initial evaluation of the patient until the ambulance arrived three minutes later.

1:30 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell and might have broken her hip at a farmhouse near 180th and Goldenrod Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:29 p.m. — A Florence fire truck gave Santa and Mrs. Claus a lift to the Florence American Legion post.

11:45 p.m. — A 69-year-old man who fell several hours earlier was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants at a home in the 600 block of S. Wilson St. in Hillsboro. He declined to have the ambulance take him to a hospital, opting to have family members do so instead.

SUNDAY

7:06 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to a house in the 100 block of W. 7th St. in Florence at the request of a deputy investigating a break-in in which an intruder was attacked by a dog and possibly a resident. The intruder declined to be taken to a hospital.

7:58 a.m. — Marion ambulance was sent to the county jail to check an unspecified inmate who declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:50 p.m. — The ambulance returned to the jail to again check an inmate who again declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:21 p.m. — A 72-year-old man with trouble breathing at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

MONDAY

8:01 a.m. — An 85-year-old woman complaining of shoulder pain at a home in the 600 block of Lawrence St. in Durham was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance.

1:41 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman with a slow heartbeat was transferred from St. Luke to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance, which volunteered to take the call instead of Marion ambulance, to which the call was assigned.

1:56 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance busy, Marion ambulance was sent to Salem Home in Hillsboro for a 75-year-old man who fell and hurt his head. He was taken to HCH.

8:13 p.m. — An 86-year-old man with elevated cardiac enzymes was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley.

8:27 p.m. — A 15-year-old boy who cut his foot by stepping on a glass ornament at a home in the 200 block of S. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
