Staff writer

The Trojans took the
court against Cheney and Hesston teams Sept. 4. Hillsboro lost the first set 18-25, but gave the Cardinals a scare, keeping the game close.

The second set was tied 17-17 and both teams struggled to close the match. Hillsboro called timeout, trailing 23-20, hoping to mount a rally.

Two Trojan hitting errors allowed Cheney to leave with a win, 25-20.

After playing their previous matches, Hesston and Hillsboro players were drenched with perspiration for the final match.

Hillsboro jumped out to an early lead and kept the Swathers on their heels, winning the first set 25-21.

The Trojans slipped a little in the second set as Hesston evened the score with a 25-18 win.

The third set was classic Wheat State League volleyball. Hesston led 8-3 when the Hillsboro student body began to make noise. The Trojans responded, narrowing the deficit 11-8.

Drying both the floor and the
ball repeatedly slowed the third set, and Hesston held on to a 15-12 lead.

The Trojans called timeout at 18-12, but exhaustion seemed to be setting in as the Swathers scored five consecutive points. Hesston finished the match with a 25-14 win.
