Flag retirement is Nov. 12

James William Miesse American Legion Post 22 of Marion will have a flag retirement ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at Marion County Park and Lake.

Section 8 of the U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” In accordance, tattered, torn, worn, and faded American flags will be retired by burning.

Anyone with a flag ready for retirement may take it to the retirement ceremony.

The post will also recognize high school students who attended Boys State and Girls State in June.

Afterward there will be a soup supper at the post home on Main Street, open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. Proceeds will be used to support veterans, youth, and community programs.

For more information, contact Post Commander Kevin Hoffer at (620) 382-5783 or Post Adjutant Gary Chaput at (620) 382-2754.
