Fundraiser serves 20 gallons of ice cream

An ice cream social Sunday at Strassburg Baptist Church to raise money for 2-year-old Ruby Schmidt, who will have open-heart surgery Oct. 1, used about 20½ gallons of ice cream, volunteer Cherie Hett said.

Troy and Eileen Schmidt are Ruby’s parents.

The guestbook was signed by 258 people, but not all of the guests signed the book, she added. Hett didn’t know how much money was raised, but she expected it was a successful fundraiser considering the number of guests.

In addition to ice cream, dozens of desserts were donated by the congregations at Strassburg Baptist Church and Aulne United Methodist Church.

The fresh-made ice cream was churned by Tom Kaufman of rural Durham, using an extra-large ice cream maker he built a few years ago for a wedding reception. It can make just under 5 gallons in less than an hour.
