Goessel dominates league tournament

Goessel won the Wheat State League volleyball tournament Saturday at Little River for the fifth time in six years.

The Bluebirds held opponents under 10 points in seven of the 10 games they played, outscoring them by a combined 250-78.

Against Rural Vista the Bluebirds won convincingly 25-7, 25-6. Goessel faced Little River for the fifth time this season and won 25-5, 25-14. The Bluebirds defeated Wakefield 25-2, 25-8. In the bracket semi-final game Goessel upended Centre 25-9, 25-13. The Bluebirds defeated Solomon in the Championship match 25-10, 25-4.

Goessel defeated Little River and Inman on Oct. 13.

Page and Eden Hiebert dominated from the strong side, with Olivia Duerksen, Alicen Meysing, and Brittney Hiebert connecting from the opposite side, as the Bluebirds took care of Little River 25-6, 25-4.

Inman grabbed several leads early in the first set. Goessel trailed 9-10 but recovered to win 25-17. In the second set, the Bluebirds were in command throughout and won 25-9.

These was the last regular season matches for Goessel seniors Anna Wiens, Aleena Cook, Alyssa Booton, Page Hiebert, and Meysing.

Goessel’s overall record is now 36-0, and the Bluebirds have had their eyes set on the post season since last year’s runner-up finish at state.

Goessel fans can watch the Bluebirds at home Saturday in the 1A Division 1 substate tournament. The winner advances to the state ournament in Hays on Oct. 30.
