The Goessel girls finished in a surprising fifth place at the state cross-country meet Saturday with 12 teams participating.
Individually, Sophie Freuler earned a 15th-place medal in a field of 84 runners. Contributing to team points were Jen Meysing, Mayuko Kanda, Riley Jarvis, and Merle Weidenhammer. The girls ran 4 kilometers and teams were allowed to enter up to seven runners, with only the top four places scoring points for team totals.
Senior Heath Goertzen qualified individually for the state meet by earning a 13th place at the regional meet. Out of 87 runners, he finished the 5-km race in 62nd place, three spots ahead of his finish in last year’s race.
