Contributing writer

The Goessel cross-country team sent five girls to compete at the regional meet Saturday in Wichita. The girls finished ahead of Pretty Prairie by one point.

Sophie Freuler finished in ninth place individually; earning a 10th-place medal was teammate Jen Meysing. Freuler, an exchange student from Sweden, and Meysing, a freshman, will find out what the competition is like at the State meet next Saturday.

Riley Jarvis, another freshman came in 20th, and Mayuko Kanda helped the team with a 25th place. Merle Weidenahmmer finished in 27th place and will join her Bluebird teammates at the state meet Saturday in Wamego.

None of Goessel’s runners has participated in the state meet before. Four runners from each team contribute to team points, but each team can enter seven runners.

Heath Goertzen will represent the boys’ team at the state meet. He finished in 13th place individually, but the boys’ team tied for fourth place, one spot away from going as a team.
