Goessel volleyball starts 4-0

Contributing writer

Goessel volleyball traveled to White City Sept. 17 for Wheat State League matches. The Bluebirds came home with two more wins in league play to start the season 4-0. Hope and White City have combined teams for the volleyball season and have adopted the name of Rural Vista.

The Bluebirds jumped out to a 10-2 lead with many hits scoring points. Alyssa Booton was successfully setting up kills for Page Hiebert; at the same time Erin Brubaker and Alicen Meysing were successful from the serving line.

Rural Vista got as close as 12-9 but the Bluebird offense and defense controlled the rest of the set. Brubaker and Olivia Duerksen tipped for points. Makayla King picked up some great digs and the Bluebirds floated to a 25-13 win.

In the second set, Rural Vista errors allowed the Bluebirds to reach a 9-1 lead. Goessel’s offense began to score with quick sets as Hiebert and Duerksen smacked winners. Rural Vista got as close as 14-7, but again the Bluebirds finished the match with a flurry. Gentry Thiesen served an ace on the last point, winning 25-10.

Goessel and Peabody-Burns both served aggressively and the first part of the game remained close with the score 16-14; Goessel leading. Peabody-Burns called a timeout, but the Bluebirds were inspired and finished the set 25-15.

In the second set, the game began with alternating scores. Peabody-Burns led 5-4 but Duerksen and Brubaker blocked and then Meysing and Brubaker stopped another Warrior attack to tie the game at 6. The Bluebirds led 13-9 and went on attack for which the Warriors did not have enough answers. Booton’s passes to Hiebert and Meysing worked well in this barrage of points as Goessel finished the game 25-13.
