The Sedgwick Cardinals were prepared to play their best on Tuesday night when undefeated Goessel came to town, and their best was good enough to send the Bluebirds down to defeat.
Goessel struggled in most areas of their game in the first set, and Sedgwick took advantage by winning 25-12. The Bluebirds refocused and played a back-and-forth game, with Goessel winning 27-25. In the final set, the Bluebirds would lead by as many as three points before the Cardinals found a way to pound out a 25-19 win.
The loss to Sedgwick was the first loss for Goessel in two seasons. The Bluebirds had strung together 55 consecutive victories.
Goessel rebounded in the nightcap against Moundridge by defeating the Wildcats 25-17, 25-10.
The Bluebirds are now 12-1for the season and return to Wheat State League competition when they go to Little River for a triangular contest with Solomon.
