Hillsboro softball opens with Smoky Valley wins

The Hillsboro Trojans picked up two wins in a season-opening doubleheader Thursday on the road against Smoky Valley.

The Trojans led 2-0 in the fourth inning when Madison Klein delivered a grand slam home run, giving the Trojans all the runs they would need.

Smokey Valley answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning off winning pitcher Allison Weber, who struck out 10 in a complete game 7-1 victory. She gave up 2 hits and walked 1.

Bradli Nowak was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 1 RBI. Weber was 3-for-5, and Emily Jost was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Trojans crushed the Vikings 11-0 in the nightcap, as Smoky Valley pitchers issued 16 walks. Hillsboro stranded 10 runners in the run-rule shortened game.

Of the 82 pitches Julie Sinclair threw while pitching a complete game, 56 were for strikes. She struck out 11 Vikings in five innings, while giving up just 2 hits and 2 walks.

Nowak did the most damage for the Trojans on offense, collecting 4 RBIs with a home run and a double. Weber, Jost, and Shannon Heiser each drew 3 walks.

The Trojans played Hoisington at home Tuesday, and have a week off before hosting Pratt next Tuesday.
