Jayne Olson, 82, died on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at home in Arkansas City, Kan. Memorial services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Private family interment will be in the Parker Cemetery at a later date.
She was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Barnard, Kan., to George and Jewell Cummings Nelson. Jayne married Robert “Bob” Olson in Glasco, Kan., and together they had six children.
She loved sewing, flower gardening and reading. After retiring as secretary for Roosevelt and Jefferson Elementary schools, she and Bob enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. In Ark City, she volunteered for the hospital auxiliary, for Meals on Wheels and for the public library delivering books to shut-ins.
A devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Jayne was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and three sisters. Her husband of 61 years, Bob died in 2009.
Jayne is survived by her twin brother, Wayne and wife Betty Nelson, and brother Paul and wife Ila Nelson of Glasco; sister-in-law Evelyn Williamson and brother-in-law Andrew Struble of Glasco; sister-in-law Martha Ann Olson of Manhattan, Kan.; daughter Christine and husband Jim Squires, son Bill and wife Kelly Olson of Ark City; daughter Sally and husband Dwight Downing of Salina, Kan.; daughter Kathy and husband Stan Utting of Hillsboro, Kan.; daughter Leslie and husband Ivan Ratzlaff of Hutchinson, Kan.; and daughter Julie Olson of Colorado Springs, Colo. Grandchildren include Jennifer Crandell, Rebecca Berg, Stephanie Berg, Amy Squires, Luke Utting, Alex Utting, Megan Graber, Tim Olson, and Andrea Ratzlaff. Jayne is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
