Hot and cold is how the Goessel High School girls’ basketball team found the Moundridge Wildcats on Friday in a non-league contest. The Bluebirds held Moundridge to four points in the first quarter and seven points in the third quarter, but the Wildcats exploded in the other periods to win, 51-29.
The Bluebirds led 6-4 after one period and trailed 27-11 at halftime. In the second half, it took Moundridge five minutes to score one point as Goessel got as close as 32-22 on buckets by Johanna Hoffman, Jessica Harvey and Page Hiebert.
The Bluebirds tried man-to-man defense as well as zone defense in the fourth quarter, but Moundridge found ways to score. Alex Hiebert hit a bucket from the baseline and then her first three pointer of the season for the Bluebirds, but Goessel lost 51-29.
Harvey led Goessel scoring with 11 points; Alex Hiebert added 9, Page Hiebert 5, and Hoffman 4. Goessel competes in the Berean Tournament next. The Bluebirds defeated Bluestem High School 42-34 on Monday in the first round of action. The Bluebird girls are now 6-5.
