Quilt squares find new homes

After the recent death of her father, Douglas Fisher of Peabody, Paula Scott was going through things in the family home when she made an interesting discovery.
She found 20 embroidered quilt squares that her mother, Betty, and other women had made. Each woman had embroidered her name in the middle of her square.
“I knew all of them,” Scott said. “They were members of a women’s club my mother belonged to.
“My first thought was, I’ll put them together and finish the project. But then I thought, why not try to return them to the women or their families.”
In just three days, she tracked down information about all the blocks.
“The quilt is completed,” she said, “just not in the way my mother had planned.”
Why it wasn’t completed may never be known, Scott said, but it was a fun project. She was surprised to find that many of the women lived in the area. Only one was out of state.
One woman said her mother had been president of the Sorosis Beta Club that made the squares back in the late ’60s or early ’70s. Another remembered her mother hurrying to embroider her name on her square to get it done by the due date.
Scott grew up at Peabody and graduated from high school in 1970.
“This was a nice, positive community project that lasted three days,” she said. “I had a chance to connect with daughters who were my age. It was a joy.”
