Ruth Lewis

Ruth M. Lewis, 90, of rural Emporia died Jan. 3 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Lewis was born Feb. 7, 1922, to Walter C. and Gladys M. Higgins Kaniper in Youngtown.

She married Vernon M. Lewis on Feb. 10, 1941, in Miller. He died in 1995.

Survivors include one son, Briant V. Lewis, Augusta; two daughters, Beverly Curry and Charlene McIlvain, both of Emporia; one sister, Lenora Thompson, Osage City; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Maurice, Harold, and Charles Kaniper; and one sister, Helen Sparks.

She worked for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for many years before retiring 12 years ago. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Coal Creek Extension Unit, Chamness 4-H Club, and the Eagle Creek Saddle Club.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral home in Emporia. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery south of Emporia.
