Shaw a bright spot for Trojans

Trojan thrower Wes Shaw just keeps getting better even as competition gets tougher.

Shaw won the shot put at the Central Kansas League meet Friday at Wiens Stadium, setting a school record with a heave of 55 feet, 1½ inches.

“Breaking the shot put record has been on Wes Shaw’s mind a lot this year, and tonight he broke through and set that new record, but I know he is not satisfied yet,” coach Dennis Boldt said. “He has some pretty lofty goals.”

Shaw also took second in javelin.

Hillsboro, the only 2A school in the CKL, finished near the bottom of the team standings, but a few Trojans broke into scoring ranks.

Kaden Ward placed third in long jump, fourth in high jump, and fifth in pole vault. Jonathan Hinerman placed sixth in the 3200 meters.

Sienna Kaufman took second in long jump, four spots ahead of teammate Addie Berens. Kaufman also placed fourth in pole vault. Eva Franz took fifth in the 400.

The 4x800-meter relay of Brittany Schale, Tiffany Schale, Savannah Unruh, and Abby Sechrist placed sixth, as did the 4x100 relay of Roxanna Nieto, Franz, Unruh, and Kaufman.

“We have one of the most competitive leagues in the state, with teams covering three different classes,” Boldt said. “I thought our athletes competed hard and represented our community well.”
