Shots richochet near sleeping baby in Peabody

Staff writer

Not only were suspicious people prowling around in Peabody the night of May 22, but a house at 713 Elm was shot at early in the morning of May 23.

“I have two bullet holes in my house, and the sheriff’s office has two shell casings from a .380 and a bullet they recovered in my wall,” householder Isaac Robbins said.

The bullet that penetrated Robbins’ house reportedly ricocheted off a kitchen cabinet and lodged in a wall above a sleeping baby.

Another Peabody resident replied that her son had notified the sheriff’s office about a suspicious person on his porch the same night.

“Same night around 11 p.m. at 4th and Maple, our son next door had to call the police,” Peabody resident Korie Hatton said. “Someone suspicious on their porch.”

Undersheriff Larry Starkey confirmed that deputies were sent to both residences.

By the time they arrived where the suspicious person was reported, nobody could be found, he said.

Starkey said that he’s not aware of any leads in the shooting, but that deputies are checking to see whether anyone had video of the incident.

“We’ll send shell casings to KBI for possible identification,” he said.

Peabody has no local police officers.

“Everybody needs to be on the lookout for their own safety,” Starkey said. “You’ve kind of got to be that way even if you do have 24-hour coverage. I’d say keep an eye on your property and your neighbors’.”

Appraiser’s records indicate the house is owned by the Murray A. Anderson Revocable Trust in Newton.
