Sister remembered in collection of dolls

Staff writer

Mary Ann Smithhart of Marion has collected various things throughout her lifetime, but one that means a lot to her is a bridal collection she obtained from her sister a year and a half ago. She had a special case made for it.

The collection is on display at Marion City Library during the month of May.

Smithhart’s sister, the late Ellen Smith of Rogers, Arkansas, died in April, and the collection is a constant reminder of her life.

“I gave her a lot of the dolls, so I got them back,” Smithhart said.

The ceramic bride and bride-bridegroom pairs range in size from a foot tall to two inches tall. Some have satin or lace gowns. One of the fanciest is an Elizabeth Taylor doll. There are several tassel dolls.

A paperweight engagement ring is included in the collection.

“It’s not an expensive collection, but it meant so much to her, and I thought this would be an appropriate time to display it,” Smithhart said.

Library director Janet Marler said the library rotates special dispalys on a regular basis, and they cover a wide range of special interests. Anyone who is interested in displaying a collection should contact her.
