Slow start derails Hillsboro girls

Hillsboro fans had to wonder Friday if the basket the Hillsboro girls were shooting at was covered in plastic wrap at Remington.

The Trojans missed 21 of 24 first-half field goal attempts as Remington streaked to a 23-8 halftime lead, and cruised to a 51-30 win.

It wasn’t until 5 minutes, 55 seconds remained in the third quarter that Allison Weber scored the Trojans’ first points of the half on a pull-up jumper in the lane.

The shot cleared the offensive funk the Trojans were in, as the team picked up 10 more points before the quarter ended. They scored 10 in the final period, with reserves for both teams seeing playing time.

Hillsboro shot 21 percent from the field for the game, and only 12 percent in the first half.

The Trojans had only two more turnovers than the Broncos, but Remington did a better job scoring off them. The Broncos held a solid 45-31 edge in rebounding.

Alex Ratzlaff scored 13 points to lead a Hillsboro offense still in search of scoring balance, with Weber the next highest score with 5.

The Trojans will try to reverse their fortunes Jan. 6 with a home game against Lyons.
