Sara Goldsby, a third grade teacher at Heusner Elementary School in Salina, was one of 32 outstanding first-year teachers chosen by the Kansas Board of Education for the Horizon Award. Goldsby is the daughter of Jim and Myrna Hamm. Her grandparents are Gaylord and Valera Hamm.

The Tampa area celebrated Kansas Day with a Kansas snow. By the morning of Jan. 30, almost three inches had accumulated.

Tom and Dee Duggan’s granddaughter, Kaylee Hall, won the spelling contest at Herington Middle School and will compete in the Dickinson County spelling bee at Chapman.

Family members celebrated the wedding anniversary of Paul and Edna Backhus and the birthdays of Phyllis Mueller and Mike Jay with dinner out on Jan. 27 in Abilene. Others present were Jennifer Jay and Cody, Bev and Tom Reid, Brad Backhus, Jason Backhus, Alisha Barney, Rod Mueller, Don and Ophelia Jacobson, and Greg Jacobson. Alisha Barney baked and decorated a cake for the occasion.

Lori Moldenhauer was a supper guest Jan. 27 of her parents, Frank and Anna Mae Stika.

Jesse Smith and Sydney of Pilsen and Lucille Kerbs were dinner guests Jan. 27 of Russ and Julie Kerbs. Ashton Smith visited in the afternoon.

Chuck and Sophia Weigel of Dallas, Texas, were supper guests Jan. 26 of Jerry and Jeanne Rziha. The Weigels’ son, Thomas, is engaged to marry the Rzihas’ daughter, Cecilia.

Paul and Edna Backhus celebrated their wedding anniversary by spending Jan. 24-25 in Hutchinson, where they attended the Kansas Ground Water Association convention. Jason Backhus and Alisha Barney joined them for the banquet Jan. 24 and some of the sessions.

Irma Benda visited Frank and Anna Mae Stika on Jan. 24.

Phyllis Branson visited Tom and Dee Duggan on Jan. 22.
