Hillsboro High School cross-country runners scored top-five finishes and raced well Sept. 18 in the varsity division of the Southeast of Saline invitational meet.

Emily Sechrist placed second in the girls’ race, which was won by Class 2A state champion Jenna Farris of Lincoln. Sechrist finished the course in 15 minutes, 42 seconds.

“Emily ran well but lost to another outstanding runner,” coach Stuart Homes said. “A highlight was Karyn Leihy’s continued improvement from race to race, as it was her strongest meet yet for the year.” Leihy finished 17th, with a time of 17:44.

Josh Richert paced the Hillsboro boys’ team with a fifth-place finish, with a time of 18:29. Jordan Bezdek placed 57th, Avery Franz finished 62nd, and JD Schmidt came in 92nd.
