Trojan tennis struggles

Staff writer

Hillsboro girls’ tennis team struggled for consistent play Thursday at Smoky Valley.

“I was frustrated by our play at times and encouraged at other times,” coach Bob Woelk said. “We hit some good shots but we have a long way to go to become more consistent.”

While players hit good shots at times, he said, some had a hard time with routine shots.

He commended Mary Leihy and Anna Glanzer for finishing 2-2 in open pool play.

Hanna Funk and Elli Weisbeck were 1-2 for the day.

“I was disappointed that we often had 40-0 or 40-15 leads in games and then failed to execute routine shots and lost games,” Woelk said. “We will continue to work on being more aggressive and confident.”

Tentative play caused Allison Gray to go 1-2 in singles competition, Woelk said, while Sonja Jost played her second varsity meet.

Hesston invitational

The Trojans shuffled players around a little on Saturday at Hesston.

Elli Weisbeck and Anna Glanzer competed in the singles bracket while the teams of Mary Leihy and Hannah Funk as well as Sonja Jost and Shelby Johnson competed in doubles play.

Wiesbeck placed 14th and Glanzer was 15th in the singles bracket while Leihy and Funk placed 13th and Jost and Johnson came in 16th in doubles play.

The Trojans play next at 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at home in the Hillsboro Trojan Invitational.
