Trojans tennis finishes year

The Trojans girls’ tennis team ended its season Friday at a regional tournament.

Caroline Roth, seeded seventh in No. Singles, started the tournament with a win against an Ellinwood player, then lost to players from Hesston Sterling.

Coach Bob Woelk said the singles bracket was loaded with great players, many of which will likely sweep the top spots at the state tournament.

Gracie Damon was eliminated from No. 2 singles play in the first round.

In doubles play, Ellian Weisbeck and Shelby Johnson received a No. 9 seed and opened with a “super tiebreaker” win over a Lyons team they had previously lost to at the league tournament.

Wiesbeck and Johnson lost to No. 1 seed Hesston and were ultimately eliminated by a Wichita team.

Kayla Gunn and Abby Fryhover were ousted from No. 2 doubles after losing their first two matches.

“I was disappointed that we did not qualify anyone for the state tournament,” Woelk said. “But, Caroline had a good season, ending the year with a record of 18-9 in singles. In any other regional, she most likely would have finished in the top six, which would have earned her a berth at the state tournament.”
