Trojans tie for 4th at home tennis tourny

The Trojans girls’ tennis team tied Circle at 29 points to share a fourth place finish Thursday at Hillsboro.

“Once again, our team was led by doubles,” coach Bob Woelk said. “This time I played Anna Glanzer and Mary Leihy at No. 1 team. They had been playing No. 2 doubles, but they had a higher finish in an open meet.”

After losing to a No. 2 team from Trinity Catholic, Glanzer and Leihy won their next two matches to go 2-1 and finish in fifth, earning the Trojans nine team points.

Hillsboro’s No. 2 doubles team of Hanna Funk and Ellian Weisbeck won their first match only to lose the next two and finish in fourth, earning the Trojans eight team points.

“Our doubles teams are still somewhat interchangeable,” Woelk said.

In singles competition, Allison Gray won her first match, but dropped her next two matches to players from Circle and Chapman.

Woelk said Gray would need to start defeating players like the Chapman opponent if she hopes to qualify for state.

“There are fewer powerhouses in this year’s regional, but it is still plenty tough,” he said.

Gray’s efforts earned the Trojan’s 12 team points at the tournament.

Hillsboro’s No. 2 singles player Shelby Johnson lost all her matches, but Woelk said she continues to improve.

“It’s only a matter of time before Shelby starts winning matches,” Woelk said.
