Wheat harvest blasts off

Staff writer

Last week weather favored farmers and now harvest is on full blast.

Dick Tippin, Cooperative Grain Supply grain coordinator, said about 20,000 bushels trickled into Hillsboro’s elevator on Friday, but the next day’s reaping dwarfed that figure.

“Saturday was a big day,” Tippin said. “We did about 126,000 bushels.”

Sunday’s count was around 40,000 bushels, he said, then spiked over 100,000 bushels again Monday.

Marion’s elevator didn’t take as much Friday, Tippin said. He thought they may have taken about 40,000 bushels Saturday.

However, grain trucks frequented Marion’s elevator Monday, depositing over 100,000 bushels.

Marion’s supply manager Mike Thomas had no time for an interview on Tuesday. He said in passing that the trucks kept rolling in.

Tippin said wheat harvest was about half way complete as of Tuesday. If weather cooperates, all the wheat might be in by the end of the week.

“Now that it’s started we’re pretty pleased,” Tippin said. “Most guys are getting about 50 to 60 bushels per acre, which is a little above average.”
