The Hillsboro Wrestling Club is starting its 20th season. Any child age 4 to 18 is eligible to join the club and wrestle. The club practices on Mondays starting Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Competitive wrestlers have a second practice, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, but the scheduling of these sessions is dependent on availability of coaches.
Interested participants are required to attend the parent information and sign-up meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday in the technology lecture hall located on the south side of Hillsboro High School. Those unable to attend the meeting can contact club director and coach Scott O’Hare at (620) 947-2378 at home, by cell phone at (785)470-1086, or by e-mail at scott.ohare@usd410.net.
The cost of the club is $35 for one wrestler, $65 for two wrestlers, or $90 for three wrestlers.
O’Hare brings 17 years of experience as a USA Wrestling Bronze certified coach. Other coaches include Bill Simhiser with seven years of experience; Sergio Gomez, four years; Todd Helmer, three years; Brandon Cummings, one year; Dylan Delk, one year; and Ryan Hefley, one year. Joining the staff this season will be Brian Rogers and Bret Mueller.
The club provides uniforms but wrestlers are required to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt for practices. Wrestling shoes are recommended but not mandatory. Clean gym shoes are required.
The club is hosting its 13th annual tournament on Dec. 1. The tournament is the main fundraiser for the club as well as a competition for the athletes.
