Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

FEB. 3

5:53 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease having trouble breathing at a home in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

10:52 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The call originally went to Marion ambulance.

2:41 p.m. — Returning from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance took a 70-year-old man with back spasms to Hillsboro Community Hospital from a farm near 220th and Kanza Rds.

4:21 p.m. — A 75-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

FEB. 4

2:19 a.m. — Locked doors and no patient to transport greeted Hillsboro ambulance attendants when they attempted to reach a 68-year-old man reported to be feeling faint at a farm near 110th and Indigo Rds.

9:12 a.m. — A 70-year-old man with unspecified symptoms at HCH was transferred by Marion ambulance to McPherson Center for Health. The call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance.

9:57 a.m. — With Marion ambulance heading from Hillsboro to McPherson, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for an 82-year-old woman who fell 23 miles away in the 100 block of W. 4th St. in Florence. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at the Hillsboro ambulance station in case of additional calls. At 10:08 a.m., however, the woman who fell called dispatchers and said she had managed to get up without help and did not need an ambulance. Both ambulances were sent back to their quarters.

12:37 p.m. — An unconscious woman at a home in the 300 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion police also were dispatched.

3:45 p.m. — A 1-year-old boy suffering a seizure at a home in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

THURSDAY

8:21 a.m. — A lethargic, unresponsive 22-month-old boy with influenza at a home in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was checked but not taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance attendants. An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro initially responded as well.

11:54 p.m. — An 85-year-old man with chest pains and vomiting was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn.

FRIDAY

11:16 a.m. — An unconscious 64-year-old man with trouble breathing at Westview Manor in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded. A Peabody police officer relayed vital signs from nurses to the ambulance while it was en route.

1:19 p.m. — A fire alarm in a storeroom at St. Luke Hospital’s kitchen was determined to have been accidentally activated before Marion firefighters arrived.

1:41 p.m. — Smoking brush piles on Pawnee Rd. between 110th and 120th Rds. were reported as a grass fire. A county road grader spread the piles out before Peabody firefighters doused them with water.

5:15 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman with a pelvic hemorrhage was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

7:54 p.m. — A 69-year-old man with an unspecified diagnosis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

SATURDAY

6:24 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman with a history of seizures and dementia who fell and hurt her back at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:36 p.m. — An 86-year-old man with nausea and hip pain after a fall at Parkside Homes duplexes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:47 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 600 block of E. Main St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Police were called because she was home alone, and doors to the home were locked.

SUNDAY

9:49 a.m. — A lethargic 70-year-old man with trouble breathing at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:42 a.m. — Marion ambulance, police, and a coroner were dispatched for an unattended death in the 600 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion.

11:45 a.m. — A 59-year-old woman vomiting and dehydrated at Parkside Homes duplexes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

1:39 p.m. — A 102-year-old man not feeling well was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance at relatives’ request from Parkside Homes to NMC Health.

8:09 p.m. — A woman who cut her shoulder in a wreck on 190th Rd. west of Limestone Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters directed traffic. Marion ambulance also headed toward the wreck but was waved off.

MONDAY

3:02 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman with head and chest pain at a home in the 700 block of Sherman St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:54 a.m. — An undisclosed patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis.

8:06 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by at an apartment in the 200 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody while law enforcement officers dealt with an out-of-control juvenile threatening to cut herself. At 8:28 a.m., however, ambulance attendants were told they wouldn’t be needed.

8:25 a.m. — What appeared to be the same 88-year-old woman brought in earlier was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. Tampa ambulance briefly was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls, but ambulance attendants were told they weren’t needed after Hillsboro ambulance was released from its call to Peabody.

3:52 p.m. — A rekindled brush fire that grew out of control near 330th and Nighthawk Rds. was extinguished within 90 minutes by Ramona firefighters.

3:56 p.m. — Florence firefighters were asked to help Chase County firefighters battle a grass fire at 100th and E Rds., but the request was canceled before firefighters arrived.

4:08 p.m. — Burns firefighters were asked to help with a grass fire near Cassoday.

5:24 p.m. — Apparently without being dispatched, Marion ambulance took an unspecified patient to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

10:15 p.m. — A Florence firefighter asked for Marion ambulance to go the 500 block of Doyle St. in Florence for a 77-year-old man only partially responsive on the ground. Ambulance attendants took the man to St. Luke, arriving at 11:38 p.m., but never indicated they had completed the assignment. Dispatchers made repeated attempts to reach them and finally decided at 12:04 a.m. to dispatch Hillsboro ambulance to a second call near US-50 and 90th Rd. for an 83-year-old woman having trouble breathing. She ended up being taken to NMC Health.
