After previous unsuccessful attempts to secure state assistance, Marion County will receive $1.7 million to replace a deteriorating bridge north of Peabody.
Gov. Laura Kelly and the state transportation department announced last week that Marion County was among 15 recipients selected for the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program.
The county will receive $1.65 million to replace Bridge 198 on Pawnee Rd. north of 120th Rd. and an additional $50,000 for removal of Bridge 70, a deficient bridge on a vacated roadway.
“It’s a good thing for Marion County to get this bridge replaced,” Doug Kjellin, road and bridge administrative coordinator, said.
The project calls for complete replacement of the bridge. Before construction can begin, the county must complete engineering work, soil sampling, and other preliminary studies
Marion County’s local share of the project is estimated at $220,276. Combined with state funding, the project has a value of $1.7 million.
The additional $50,000 award for Bridge 70 is separate.
KDOT received 182 applications requesting a combined $222 million during this funding cycle.
