Trojans face ‘brutal’ week of volleyball matches

Staff writer

Hillsboro faces what its coach is calling a brutal week ahead as other county teams have only limited success.

Hillsboro

The Trojans didn’t have any matches over the weekend but finished league play Tuesday night against Haven and Smoky Valley.

“We have a brutal week ahead,” coach Sandy Arnold said before the matches. “Ten matches in five days.”

Thursday, Hillsboro will travel to Emporia for non-league competition with Emporia and Great Bend.

Saturday, Hillsboro will host its own invitational with competition including state-ranked Rock Creek, Halstead, Circle, Minneapolis, and league for Haven.

Hillsboro is 20-6 for the season and 4-2 in district.

Goessel

The Bluebirds competed with several of the best teams in the state at a tournament Saturday at Canton-Galva

Serving aggressively, the Bluebirds pulled out a victory against Ingalls, 25-18, 25-21.

Halstead proved too much in the second match as the Bluebirds lost 25-18, 25-18.

The Bluebirds took control of a match against Marion 25-17, 25-11.

Finishing second in their pool, Goessel advanced to face the No. 1 team in 1A, Little River.

The Bluebirds matched the Redskins point for point halfway through the first set, but Little River took advantage, winning 25-15. In the second set, Goessel tied 14-14 before slipping and losing 25-21.

Playing for third place against Inman proved to be too much for the Bluebirds. They were defeated 25-15, 25-17.

The Bluebirds could face Little River, which won the tournament, for the third time this season in the Wheat State League tournament Saturday at Little River.

Goessel is 18-9 overall and 6-1 in the league.

Marion

The Warriors finished 1-8 Saturday at the Canton-Galva tournament.

Marion started off 0-2 against Halstead but was able to push Ingalls to three sets, finishing 1-2.

The Warriors then lost to Goessel and Canton-Galva in straight sets each.

Marion (9-16 , 4-6 in district play) will compete Thursday against Berean Academy.

Centre

The Cougars traveled to Peabody-Burns again Tuesday but this time were scheduled to play Goessel and Elyria Christian.

“We have been fortunate enough to travel locally to play different teams in the county because of our Wheat State League schedule,” coach Amy Finch said.

Sydney Smith stood out to Finch last week.

“She gave us a lot of great kills during the game,” Finch said.

The Cougars will travel Saturday to Little River for a league tournament.

“Our girls have done a great job of getting better at working as a team,” Finch said. “We are so proud of each of them.”

Peabody-Burns

The Warriors wrapped up their regular play Tuesday night with home games against Goessel and Elyria.

Centre was host out of a different Peabody-Burns gym in a mod-quad matchup.

“It’s always fun to play other county teams,” coach Clarissa Dutton said. “Since it’s such a small area, the girls tend to know each other. It makes for a really competitive but friendly environment, which is a great way to finish off the regular season,” Dutton said.

Peabody-Burns will travel Saturday to the league tournament in Little River.
