OPINION

  • Readers offer scam solution

There were several readers who called and offered information after the publishing of an editorial last week about a scam. Readers believe the scammers that were mentioned were trying to get e-mail addresses. For those who missed it, the newspaper office had been inundated with calls from bogus advertisers who want to run classifieds for free dogs. They use a stolen credit card number to purchase the ad and then readers are to answer the ads through an e-mail address. My question was, “What does the scammer gain by doing this? The ads cost only a few dollars.”

  • Thanks, Legion Riders

Memorial Day is a time for reflection and gratitude. And such was the case Monday at Memorial Park in Hillsboro. What a moving and thoughtful program the local American Legion presents each year. It is reverent, thoughtful, and meaningful.

  • One woman's view: Celebrating retirement years

May has been designated as Older Americans Month. This seems to be a good time to make a few suggestions to my contemporaries about making the most of life in our declining years. I warn you that some of these ideas may be a bit of “Do as I say, not as I do.” However, I believe even the ones I don’t follow are good advice. First of all, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, “Your life ain’t over till it’s over.” Sometimes I hear friends say that there is no point in getting a better car, hearing aid, dental work (or fill in the blank) because they won’t live long enough to be worth spending the money.
